THE ULTIMATE CROSSING
Kai Lenny is one of the world’s foremost water athletes. He’s taking on The Ultimate Crossing – 115 nautical miles in one day from the shores of Maui to the beaches of Oahu. His only sources of power will be what the oceans and winds give him or what he can create with his paddle. Follow Kai as he takes on this massive challenge.
TAKING ON JAWS —TRAINING A WATERMAN—
Pe'ahi, Maui is home to one of the world's most legendary big surf breaks – better known as Jaws. The world's best surfers flock here in the hope of riding some of the biggest waves in the world. Kai Lenny grew up with it in his backyard. He uses Jaws to hone his skills and to build the stamina to face whatever the ocean throws at him.
KAI LENNY —BORN ON THE WAVES—
His first name means “Ocean” in Hawaiian. His middle name is actually Waterman. Kai Lenny was destined to live his life on the water. Born and raised on Maui, Kai first surfed at 4. He grew up watching and learning from legendary watermen like Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama. Inspired by his mentors and the incredible surf culture of Hawaii, he’s developed into a world-class surf athlete in multiple events and has already won six Stand Up Paddleboard World Championships.

BEAUTIFUL AND DANGEROUS —WIND, WATER, WILD ANIMALS—
Few places in the world can match the Hawaiian Islands for natural beauty. The turquoise waters, volcanic cliffs and ocean currents make it an exotic paradise. But below the surface lurk multiple dangers. Kai’s support team will stick close as his journey takes him through waters where 40 different species of sharks can be found. Changing wind and surf conditions have the potential to throw Kai miles off course.
—CHECK OUT KAI'S GEAR—
STAND UP PADDLEBOARD
The board Kai uses is extremely light for grueling ocean races. It’s designed for fast downwind routes and allows a skilled rider to catch ocean swells and use the ocean power for propulsion.
- Model: Custom-made by Naish
- Length: 17’
- Width: 25”
- Construction: Styrofoam core with carbon fiber finish
KITE AND SAIL
The team chose a kite and sail with simple, no-fuss designs to make launching and retrieving the gear from the boat easier. The kite delivers the wind range of a larger kite with the precision turning of a smaller kite. The sail offers a crisp balanced feel and straight-line speed.
- Kite Model: Naish Trip
- Size: 10 and 12 meter
- Sail Model: Naish NOA
- Size: 7 meter
A version of this all-round board equipped with straps was used extensively on Kai's journey. The board is good for riding waves, free-riding and jumping. It's a great combination of speed, control and drive to provide flexibility for a variety of wave and wind conditions.
- Model: Naish Global
- Length: 5’10”
- Width: 18 ½”
- Weight: 6-7 lbs
- Construction: Fiberglass, carbon and bamboo
Kai uses a board that is designed for very light conditions which can still be utilized if strong winds occur. The design of the board and the larger volume allow Kai to maintain a strong plane through wind lulls. He paired the board with a 7-meter sail.
- Model: Naish Bullet
- Length: 7’7”
- Width: 25”
- Weight: 15 lbs
- Volume: 115 liters
- Construction: Styrofoam core and carbon fiber glass finish
THE FINISH LINE —MOST DIVERSE CROSSING IN HAWAIIAN HISTORY—
Kai battled strong winds, tangled lines and impending nightfall to realize his dream. After 11 hours in and on the water, Kai became the first person to cover the distance between Maui and Oahu using multiple forms of human powered transportation.
